One of the original ten Essex class aircraft carriers built, “Big Ben” had a speed of 33 knots, carried a complement of 3,448. On March 19, 1945 Franklin was heavily damaged by a single enemy plane just 50 miles off the coast of Japan. Lt. Comm. Joseph O’Callahan S.J., USNR, the ship’s chaplain, was the first military Chaplain to receive the nation’s highest honor, the Congressional Medal of Honor
