A powerful 38-gun heavy frigate designed by Joshua Humphreys as one of the original six frigates constructed for the United States Navy as authorized under the Naval Act of 1794. Built by Josiah Fox at Gosport Navy Yard, VA and launched in 1799. She had a relatively successful career up until her engagement, under the command of Captain James Lawrence, and subsequent capture by the notorious HMS Shannan (38-gun frigate) off Boston in 1813. This waterline display depicts the vessel on a port tack in a relatively calm sea towing it's six ship's boats and heroically displaying three U.S. ensigns as it would have looked just prior to its battle with Shannan. The solid wood core model has been planked-over with the bottom partially copper sheathed. It shows individual deck planking and other delicately crafted deck furniture, gear, armament and fittings. Also, includes the set-up of its defensive boarding nets all hoisted above deck level. It is painted with a black topsides and thin ocher gunport band, with medium gray interior bulwarks. The model is thoroughly rigged with twisted copper wire appropriately painted, tissues sails in various configurations. The water is hand-carved of jet long and then hand-painted with artist oils. It is mounted in a English walnut burl veneer case with matching trim and two brass engraved plaques.
