With the advent of the steam yacht in the 1840s and '50s, the sailing yacht became relegated to the sport of racing. A model for the new narrower and deeper contemporary sailing yacht design, schooner Miranda was designed and built by John Harvey in 1876 and measured 112' in length overall (86'5" LWL), with a breadth of 18'11", draft of 13' and sail area of 7,700 square feet. MIRANDA had a long and successful racing career and was finally broken up in 1910, after a life of thirty-four years.
