Atalanta, C.S.S.
By: P.C. Coker III
In 1862 the blockade-runner Fingal was cut down to her deck and covered over with wood and armor to convert her into this Confederate ironclad. She surrendered to Federal monitors Weehawken and Nahant in 1863 and was used as a North Atlantic minesweeper. In 1869 Atalanta was sold to Haiti, renamed Triumph, and disappeared at sea off Cape Hatteras in December of the same year.
