A Day Out

By: Rex Stewart

Marine sculpture depicts a fisherman in his dory, lobstering off the New England coast circa 1890. A typical dory was 14’ – 18’ in length, and would be fitted out for various fishing methods including lobstering and cod, sword or halibut fishing. Used by the Portuguese 500 years ago to fish around Iceland and Newfoundland, these dories have since been employed by generations of Lunenburg, coastal Maine and Cape Ann fishermen on the Grand Banks. The hull is a combination plank and solid construction to authentic proportions, includes. . . bucket with lobster catch, lobster traps, buoys, knife, bait bucket, gaffs, coiled ropes, compass, etc. The figure, lobsters and sea are all hand carved and painted, the fisherman is outfitted in typical So’wester. Displayed in a custom ebonized case, glazed cover with brass trim.
