Richard S. Glanville

RICHARD S. GLANVILLE (1943- ): A librarian with a Masters degree in German, Mr. Glanville has been building ship models as a part-time professional since 1975. He has lectured at schools and local museums, and one of his early works, the 1/8” scale model of USS Constitution, is on display at the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum in Savannah and the Battleship North Carolina Museum, Wilmington. Most of his models are now in private collections throughout the United States.

BALTIMORE CLIPPER
Typical, armed 11-gun American topsail schooner of the War of 1812, built to sail as a privateer under government commission. All-natural wood finish model is constructed of solid hull planked-over; with laid decks, copper-sheathed bottom. Fully rigged.

CHALLENGE
224’ clipper ship designed by William H. Webb of NY and launched in 1851. Considered one of the most graceful "China clippers", she set a speed record from Shanghai to San Francisco in 34 days. Solid hull construction of basswood, planked over topsides, built-up bulwarks and laid deck planking. Includes all appropriate deck gear, fittings, and furniture. Rigged with all standing and basic running lines per practice and research. Fully painted with natural wood highlights and/or trim work.

SUNBEAM
This classic whaling bark was built at Mattapoisett, MA in 1856. Between May 1856 and August 1908 she made 15 whaling voyages of two to four years each, yielding a
total of 28,625 barrels of whale oil. Model has solid hull construction with coppersheathed bottom. Authentically painted and rigged with furled sails, showing five
fully-equipped whaleboats.

U.S.S. CONSTITUTION
This famous 44 gun frigate was built between 1794 and 1797 at Hartt’s Shipyard in Boston. The model shows its 'as launched' configuration with Hercules figurehead and stern decorations, which are based on period paintings by Michele Felice Cornè. The model is constructed semi plank-on-frame: starboard side is fully planked-in, painted, and copper sheathed, port side below waterline has exposed mahogany mid-ship frames. Deck planking is individually laid, with built-up bulwarks. She shows all basic standing and running rigging per naval practice, and carries three ship’s boats. Extra masts and spars are also shown on deck. Model is presented full hull, mounted on brass pedestals, and displayed in a custom glazed & ebonized case with a walnut 'burl' plinth and a single hand lettered gold leaf name plaque.
